Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS)
The Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) was established on July 1, 2000, through a government order published in the Government Gazette, Notice No. 293 of 2000. This establishment was made under Section 3(1) of the Executive Agencies Act No. 30 of 1997, marking a significant step toward improving the quality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness of road maintenance and development in Tanzania. Since its inception, TANROADS has played a pivotal role in managing the country’s road network, ensuring safer and more reliable transportation infrastructure.
TANROADS is tasked with the management of approximately 35,000 kilometers of roads, which include 12,786 kilometers of trunk roads and 22,214 kilometers of regional roads. This responsibility is defined under the Roads Act No. 13 of 2007, with subsequent reclassifications up to June 2015. The agency’s mandate encompasses the maintenance, rehabilitation, and development of these roads, aiming to enhance connectivity, support economic growth, and improve the overall quality of life for Tanzanians.
The establishment of TANROADS was driven by the need to address challenges in road infrastructure, including inadequate maintenance, inefficiencies, and rising costs. By operating as an executive agency, TANROADS has been able to streamline operations, adopt modern technologies, and implement best practices in road construction and maintenance. Over the years, the agency has made significant strides in improving the condition of Tanzania’s road network, contributing to the country’s socio-economic development.
TANROADS continues to play a critical role in Tanzania’s infrastructure landscape, ensuring that the road network meets the growing demands of a rapidly developing nation. Through its commitment to quality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness, the agency remains a key driver of progress in Tanzania’s transportation sector.
