Kilombero Sugar Company Limited (KSCL) is one of Tanzania’s leading sugar producers, operating in the Morogoro Region. Established in 1960, KSCL has grown to become a significant player in the country’s sugar industry.
Estate and Outgrowers: KSCL manages a total crop estate of approximately 26,000 hectares, with 10,000 hectares owned by the company and around 16,000 hectares cultivated by smallholder farmers known as Kilombero Growers. These growers, numbering about 8,000, supply approximately 600,000 tonnes of cane annually.
Production Capacity: The company currently produces 126,000 tonnes of sugar per annum, contributing significantly to Tanzania’s sugar supply.
Ownership and Partnerships:
Shareholding: KSCL is a subsidiary of Illovo Sugar Africa, which holds a 75% shareholding, while the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania owns the remaining 25%.
Collaborations: In partnership with the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF), KSCL works with sugarcane farmers on climate-smart land and water management practices. This program aims to improve the sugarcane value chain by providing farmers with access to attractive lending options and introducing high-yield seed varieties, promoting conservation and habitat restoration.
Community and Sustainability Initiatives:
KSCL is committed to social sustainability, focusing on improving the livelihoods of local communities through various initiatives. These include supporting education, healthcare, and infrastructure development projects in the regions where they operate.
Location and Infrastructure:
The company’s operations are centered around Kidatu, a town in the Kilombero District of the Morogoro Region. Kidatu serves as a strategic location due to its connectivity via the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) railway, facilitating efficient transportation of sugar products to various markets.
