Founded in 1950, Doctors with Africa CUAMM holds the distinction of being the first healthcare-focused non-governmental organization (NGO) recognized by the Italian government. Over the decades, it has grown to become Italy’s foremost organization dedicated to safeguarding and enhancing the health and well-being of vulnerable communities in sub-Saharan Africa. With a mission rooted in equity and sustainability, Doctors with Africa CUAMM implements long-term cooperation programs and responds to emergencies, ensuring that essential healthcare services are accessible to all, even in the most challenging circumstances.
Today, Doctors with Africa CUAMM operates in nine sub-Saharan African countries: Angola, Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Ivory Coast, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. The organization employs approximately 3,500 dedicated workers on the ground, including 273 Italian professionals, who collaborate with local communities to deliver impactful healthcare solutions.
Doctors with Africa CUAMM’s initiatives are wide-ranging and transformative. The organization supports 21 hospitals, 116 districts (focusing on public health, maternal and child health, infectious diseases, and training programs), and four nursing and midwifery schools in South Sudan, Uganda, and Ethiopia. Additionally, it partners with a university in Mozambique, fostering education and capacity-building to strengthen local healthcare systems.
