IOM’s mission encompasses a broad range of activities, including:

    • Assisting Migrants in Need: Providing humanitarian aid to migrants, refugees, and internally displaced persons affected by conflict, natural disasters, and other emergencies.
    • Migration Health: Ensuring the health and well-being of migrants through medical screenings, vaccinations, and health education.
    • Facilitating Migration: Offering support for voluntary return and reintegration, resettlement assistance, and family reunification programs.
    • Migration Policy and Research: Conducting research and providing data to inform migration policies and practices globally.

    Recent Developments:

    • Aid to Rohingya Refugees in Indonesia: On March 11, 2025, IOM reinstated humanitarian aid to over 900 Rohingya refugees in Indonesia after initially reducing support due to significant funding cuts from its largest donor, the United States. Jeff Labovitz, IOM’s chief of mission in Indonesia, confirmed that the aid program in Pekanbaru, Sumatra, is back in full operation with no planned reductions in services.
    • Migrant Boat Incidents off Yemen and Djibouti: Four days ago, IOM reported that at least two people died and 186 are missing after four boats carrying African migrants capsized off the coasts of Yemen and Djibouti. The incidents highlight the perilous journeys undertaken by migrants seeking better opportunities.
    • World Migration Report 2024: IOM released the World Migration Report 2024, providing comprehensive data and analysis on global migration trends. This twelfth edition explores recent developments in migration and mobility worldwide.
